  • Does Hair Oiling Really Work? London Stylist Explains

Hair oils have become a staple in many beauty routines, promising to deliver luscious, shiny locks. But how should they be applied, and can they actually do more harm than good if overused? Jasmine Cleo, Curly Hair Specialist and Stylist at Taylor Taylor London’s Portobello salon, shares her insights on the proper use of hair oils to achieve the best results. Credit: Taylor Taylor Can You Over-Oil Your Hair? The golden rule with hair oils is moderation. A little goes a long way, and overuse can lead to the opposite of the desired effect, making your hair even drier and leading to a vicious cycle. Jasmine emphasizes that hair oils should primarily be used on your scalp to promote growth and overall hair health. Think of your hair like your skin: it needs moisture but can become suffocated and damaged if overloaded with heavy oils. How Often Should You Oil Your Hair? For optimal results, Jasmine recommends oiling your hair and scalp no more than once a week. She advises doing this the night before you plan to wash your hair. This allows the oils to penetrate deeply and work their magic, ensuring that your hair is hydrated and nourished when you wash it out the next day. What Is the Most Effective Method for Hair Oiling? The best approach to hair oiling, according to Jasmine, is to apply the oil to your scalp and mid-lengths before bed, then wash your hair the next morning. Combining this routine with regular trims every 8 to 12 weeks will significantly enhance the shine and health of your hair. Regular trims help remove dry, dead ends, preventing split ends and promoting healthier growth. What Are the Best Products to Use? Jasmine advises avoiding products containing silicones and sulfates, opting instead for natural oils. Her personal favorites include: Peppermint Oil:  Ideal for those with a dry, flaky scalp and particularly beneficial for individuals with coily and curly hair who may not wash their hair as frequently. Peppermint oil helps cleanse the scalp and hair of residue and buildup. Rosemary and Rosehip Oils:  These oils are excellent for promoting hair growth. Castor Oil:  A classic for growth, but should be used sparingly due to its thick consistency. For a reliable range of quality oils, Jasmine recommends Mielle Organics, particularly their Rosemary Mint Oil, which can be found here . Can Hair Oils Be Used as a Styling Product? Yes, but with caution. If you want to use hair oils for styling, apply a very small amount to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair to add shine. For a fantastic styling oil, Jasmine suggests Davines Oi Oil. Other Tips for Hair Growth Jasmine underscores that hair oils alone won’t solve all hair issues. Regular trims are crucial, as many people avoid haircuts due to past bad experiences, leading to unhealthy, damaged hair. A consistent oiling routine combined with regular trims will yield immediate improvements in your hair's health and appearance. Finally, she advises lowering your shower temperature. While hot water can feel soothing, it can strip your hair of essential oils, leading to dryness and damage.

  • The Top Four Cities Across The Globe To Celebrate The 4th of July

In 1776, on July 4, 13 American colonies led by George Washington defeated the soldiers of Great Britain and proclaimed their independence in the Continental Congress, which was an assembly with 56 delegates from the colonies.  They did so through a Declaration of Independence, which sanctioned some key principles, such as that of no longer being politically and economically dependent on Great Britain. Among the inalienable rights recognized by the Declaration are those to life, liberty and happiness. Independence Day was celebrated for the first time in 1791, but it was only in 1941 that it became a recognized and paid federal holiday. Americans celebrate it in the best way, organizing parties, parades, events and much more in every state. Even those who are far from their homeland want to celebrate.  New York, of course! Those who are on holiday on this special day will find the Big Apple invaded by American flags and its colours, blue, white and red. But the most anticipated event is the fireworks show offered by Macy's, with record numbers. This is the biggest event ever on the 4th of July in New York, broadcast live nationally.  This year, the dazzling display in the sky will feature over 60,000 shells in more than 30 colours, as well as live performances from Tanner Adell, Luis Fonsi, The War And Treaty, and Lainey Wilson. This year, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks will be launched from barges on the Hudson River, roughly between 14th Street and 34th Street. Take a cruise around New York Harbour and you’ll enjoy a holiday buffet and live D.J. entertainment as you watch fireworks explode around the Statue of Liberty. London Benjamin Franklin House — the former London home of the American Founding Father — hosts Independence Day celebrations across several days, in addition to the usual Historical Experience which gives an insight into the 16 years Franklin spent living here. The house is decorated for Independence Day from 28 June onwards, but the bulk of celebrations happen the following week. On 4 July, enjoy a walking tour around Franklin's London, and a museum late when you can sample American-style refreshments and drinks. This is followed by architectural tours of the house on Friday 5 July. You can celebrate to the Savoy, where one of London's long surviving American bars resides. Their signature cocktails date back to 1889 when the Savoy opened. It's since hosted a series of seriously talented cocktail wizards such as Harry Craddock, who left US prohibition, ended up at the Savoy, and penned most of the Savoy Cocktail book's recipes. Miami In Miami you are spoiled for choice, between public parks and immense beaches, you can have fun until the evening, or until the highlight of Independence Day: the show of the magnificent fireworks. The sky of the city explodes with colours for hours thanks to the numerous fireworks displays that animate the lagoon and the skyline. One of the busiest places to watch fireworks is Downtown's Bayfront Park. Here already in the afternoon, families with children and groups of friends gather to enjoy the numerous attractions that the park offers, waiting for the evening fireworks show, which is undoubtedly the most admired. From 9 pm and for over 20 minutes, thousands of fireworks are set off continuously from various platforms located in the Downtown bay, colouring the sky with a thousand shades. Milan Independence Day is a national holiday, deeply felt in the United States of America, but little celebrated in the rest of the world. In Italy, you can participate in some concerts and some events. In Milan, the New York-inspired Rivington, the first New York-inspired restaurant in Milan represents the perfect theater to celebrate Independence Day, with an iconic dessert of the United States and in particular of the Big Apple, the NY-STYLE CHEESECAKE. Sitting between the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Porta Nuova skyline, immersed in a jazzy candlelit atmosphere, it will be possible to let yourself be carried away by the unique flavours of the contemporary reinterpretation of a classic dessert, born in New York in the middle of of the last century.  In addition to the cheesecake, the Rivington menu offers some traditional dishes from the early twentieth century, revisited by the creativity of chef Guglielmo Giudice such as the Classic Waldorf Salad, the "Hudson" Steak Tartare, the Rockefeller-style oysters au gratin with spinach and pecorino, the Dover Sole à La Meunière and the “Surf & Turf, Angus fillet with fresh steamed lobster, flavoured butter and port reduction.

  • Hotel Review: Anda Barut Collection, A Luxury Wellness Getaway

In the heart of the stunning Turkish Riviera lies the Anda Barut Collection, a sanctuary where luxury intertwines with wellness to create an extraordinary retreat. Located on the pristine shores of the Aegean, this five-star resort offers an unparalleled experience, perfectly blending indulgence with revitalisation. For its opening week, Anda Barut hosted a wellness weekend in collaboration with BodyHoliday, where our Editor, Rebecca, trained alongside Olympians and World Champions. Here, she gives her review... Wellness Weekend I've often proclaimed that I have the best job in the world. Reviewing luxury hotels and calling a 'holiday' my day job is an absolute delight. But, my stay at Anda Barut was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As someone who occasionally dabbles in fitness but often finds it a chore, I was curious and a bit apprehensive about what lay ahead. I used to be a competitive swimmer, and have always said, "I am meant to be in water, I cannot work out on land", so the idea of spending a weekend amidst Olympic athletes, participating in various wellness activities, was thrilling yet intimidating. Picture this: It's a crisp mid-May morning, the Aegean is glistening under the early sun, and a group of eager runners are gathering at 8 am. Amidst them, a familiar figure emerges—Paula Radcliffe, practically gliding with her characteristic grace. Paula, along with other Olympians and dancing stars, is here at Anda Barut for a Wellness Weekend, starting the day with a leisurely 3.5-mile run around the sprawling grounds. But the morning’s activities are just the beginning. Soon after, a formidable lineup including Daley Thompson, Colin Jackson, Denise Lewis, and Jamie Baulch takes charge, subjecting guests to a challenging circuit training session right on the seafront. One of the most exhilarating activities of the weekend was the rowing session, led by Olympic rowers Vicky Thornley and Rick Egington. Vicky and Rick’s enthusiasm was infectious; their coaching was encouraging and supportive, making even the most novice rowers (myself included), feel like pros. As we glided over the waves, I felt a connection with the water, and by the end of the session, I was convincing myself to join my local rowing club. Later that day, I joined the Dance Shred class with the lively and energetic duo, James and Ola Jordan from "Strictly Come Dancing." I’ve always enjoyed dancing, but this was on a whole new level. The class was a whirlwind of fun, laughter, and serious cardio. James and Ola brought their signature charm and expertise to the session, and guided us through the Cha Cha and the Charleston. By the end, I felt like I had not just worked out, but also experienced a mini dance party with some of the best in the business. Dancing is hardcore, and I will be the first to admit that I used to say “I could easily do that” whilst watching Strictly…but, I can promise you, I will never say that again. The next day, the Aqua Fit class awaited. Led by the JEThrive’s Jordan and Ellie, this high-energy and fun fitness class was the perfect end to our stay - I wish my local Aqua Fit instructors had even half the energy this duo had! The Wellness event, meticulously organized by Jamie, Cheryl Hicks, and their team at Call Bruce, along with the help of The Ripple Effect, was a perfect fit for Anda Barut's ethos of blending luxury with active rejuvenation. It provided not just a break from the routine but was also a reminder to myself that joy can be found in moving, exploring, and living fully. The Hotel: Anda Barut goes beyond mere hospitality—it's a sanctuary where families, couples, and solo travellers find their perfect escape. From the indulgent spa treatments featuring traditional Turkish baths and expert masseuses all the way from Bali, to the thrill of water sports, and even a water park with adrenaline-pumping slides, there's something to captivate every guest's heart. The luxurious rooms, all with a sea-view, are equipped with thoughtful amenities such as a coffee station and a mini fridge that's replenished daily with a selection of beverages and snacks. Adding to the convenience, each room features a smart pad allowing you to request services like turn-down service, enhancing your comfort with effortless efficiency. But perhaps the highlight of the accommodation experience are the expansive balconies (or exclusive swim-up pools available in select rooms). The 'Zones' at Anda Barut The resort’s clever zoning ensures that guests seeking lively poolside parties can indulge without disturbing those enjoying a tranquil patisserie treat or a rejuvenating Turkish coffee nearby. The Community Zone is located in the centre of the hotel and is home to the main communal facilities, including the main restaurant and main pool area. The Adult Zone is located on the left side of the hotel and features facilities for adults only, including a bar, bistro and pool. These facilities can be used by adults staying in any zone of the hotel, but rooms in this zone can only be occupied by adults. The Family Zone is located on the right side of the hotel and features family facilities including the adventure park, mini club and aqua park. The Bayou Villas are located along the edge of the resort, in front of the Family and Adult zones. Each Villa has its own private pool, whilst guests can also access facilities in all other zones. Food and Drink The resort's culinary offerings are equally impressive, with eleven distinct dining venues that cater to every palate and preference. From the sumptuous buffet spreads at the Zestful Bazaar Main Restaurant, featuring a tantalizing array of international and Turkish delicacies, to the sophisticated a la carte options at No Se and Kara restaurants, Anda Barut Collection did not disappoint. Remember to book your dinner table at each restaurant beforehand, as they can get booked up in advance. However, at lunch-time, they work on a walk-in basis. One unique feature of the resort's dining experience is its bar service. Unlike traditional setups, the bars at Anda Barut Collection did not have menus. Instead, we were encouraged to request our favourite cocktails, wines, or beverages directly from the expert bartenders. This personalised approach really elevated the level of luxury, as every drink was crafted to perfection, and tailored to individual preferences and whims. Accessible via Jet2 flights from major UK airports, with seamless transfers from Bodrum Airport, Anda Barut Collection beckons with its promise of luxury, relaxation, and unforgettable moments.
