  • Gusbourne Unveils the 2016 Vintage of Prestigious Fifty One Degrees Nort

England’s beloved winery launches the second vintage of its esteemed, Fifty One Degrees North. The most awarded English sparkling wine producer, Gusbourne is known for offering excellence in every bottle. It’s no surprise then, that the winery, which was owned by John de Goosebourne, dates back to 1410. Fast forward, and since planting its first vines in 2004, the company had a single goal, to create English Sparkling Wines that would stand up alongside the very finest offering from across the globe. Always vintage, Gusbourne offers the very best expressions that are unique to each growing season, that results in an authentic reflection of a time and place. Starting with the grapes, the Kent land is home to the classic grape varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, and by growing the grapes themselves in their vineyards in Appledore, the quality and standards can be maintained to the brand’s liking; and hence the host of global awards, accolades, and recognition. Now, Champagne enthusiasts rejoice as Gusbourne’s most exclusive and premium sparkling wine, Fifty One Degrees North  has released its 2016 vintage expression. After all, its well-regarded 2014 vintage sold out in just nine months. Unique in form, Fifty One Degrees North embraces its roots and pays homage via the name, yes you’ve guessed it, it’s the latitudinal coordinates of Gusbourne’s vineyard. Regarded as an excellent year for winemaking, there were near-perfect growing conditions of 2016 with a mild spring combined with the warm and dry summer, which resulted in abundant, perfectly ripened fruit, Jon Pollard, Chief Vineyard Manager, says on this, “2016 offered optimum growing conditions, allowing us to create this exceptional vintage prestige cuvée, and I’m confident that this wine will continue to provide a benchmark for the top-tier quality of English sparkling wine.” A worthy successor to Gusbourne’s critically acclaimed 2014 release was then formed.  On its terroir and expertise, Pollard shares, "Fifty One Degrees North is made possible by the combination of an in-depth knowledge of our terroir and the skill, craftsmanship and innovation of the Gusbourne winemaking team.” He continues, “England is recognised now as having a climate ideal for sparkling wine grapes, and I believe that Fifty One Degrees North is the ultimate expression of what we are now able to achieve in this country.”  Blending two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir using fruit grown from both  Gusbourne’s Kent and West Sussex vineyards, the tasting notes are distinct, thanks to the mineral and maritime influences. The result? A singular vintage wine that offers a balanced, multi-layered composition due to the silky, rich, and intense fruit grown in the clay and sandstone Kent vineyards, with added elegance and freshness. Laura Rhys MS, Gusbourne Global Ambassador, shares, "The reaction to our inaugural vintage of Fifty One Degrees North was outstanding and I’m very proud of that. I have been thrilled to see customers from all corners of the globe get so excited about it and to see it being served across the UK and abroad, from Norway, the USA, and Germany to Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. There has been such an obvious change in perception towards English sparkling wine in recent years and I’m delighted that Gusbourne has played such a central role in that." It has been so well received, the 2016 vintage can be found in leading restaurants and hotels from Moor Hal, Sat Bains and The Pig to Four Seasons Hampshire and the Mandarin Oriental and Ynyshir.  Other Sparking Expressions  from Gusbourne Gusbourne offers a host of award-winning English sparkling wines, from the signature Blanc de Blancs to the best-selling Brut Reserve, all crafted using the estate-grown Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. 2013 Blanc de Blancs Late Disgorged The extended lees ageing of this wine offers a complexity and creaminess, with hints of toasted Brazil nut, fresh pastry, plus bright citrus fruits, stone fruits and a minerality.  2015 Brut Reserve Late Disgorged Expert plenty of citrus peel, green apple and stone fruits alongside brioche and biscuit notes. There’s a zingyness thanks to the lemon sherbet aromas, that evolve into a creamier lemon finish on the palate, with white peach and pear. The extended lees ageing here brings notes of buttered toast and delicate spice. 2018 Blanc de Meuniers, Down Field Vineyard, West Sussex Down Field gives powerful, defined styles of Pinot Meunier which are elegant, profiling wild strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, with red apple and ripe peach. There’s a touch of spice from the lees ageing. 2019 Rosé Magnum Our distinctive English Rosé is a sparkling for all seasons. It's characteristically complex, combining red-fruit flavours with spice, minerality and balanced acidity. It's incredibly versatile when it comes to food matching. See more on: gusbourne.com .

  • Discovering the Refined Side of Amsterdam: A Luxurious City Break Beyond the Stereotypes

For one reason or another, I’ve found myself in Amsterdam far more often than I ever imagined. It’s not that I don’t like art, history, canals, tulips, and stroopwafels, it’s just that I came to associate Amsterdam primarily only with legal prostitution and weed. I blame pop culture and the way the city is typically talked and written about for conditioning me to think of Amsterdam as some kind of distorted Disneyland for a certain type of young adult. I’d never been interested in girls in windows or pot as a young man and at 48, I’m still not partaking in those particular pleasures. Yet I’ve come to adore this city for short stays because there’s a bevy of luxurious places to stay and fascinating things to see and do. The College Hotel (Marriott Autograph Collection) Nestled into a stately old school house dating back to the late 1800s, this Autograph Collection Marriott property features less than four dozen guest rooms, each uniquely designed, shaped (high ceiling on the 1st floor, dramatic wood beamed ceilings on the 2nd) and outfitted with remnants of those ancient educational days. There are hidden pencils, copybooks, and more inside each room, and maths equations (thankfully solved or you might never find your room after a few glasses of wine at night) making up the room numbers on the outside beside each door. This property is my top choice for a luxurious Amsterdam stay that, surprisingly, won’t break the bank. This is because it’s situated just outside the tourist ring of canals, but conveniently on the Number 2 tram line (with a stop a stone’s through from the front door) which placed me at the door of the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Moco modern art museum, and the Diamant (Diamond) Museum — in short, Amsterdam’s prestigious Museum Quarter. The College Hotel looks beautiful inside and out. At check-in, I was presented with a range of scents, each named something vaguely academic-related. I chose “The Dean” and later that evening, and again on each night of my stay, my room (the spacious room 115, complete with double rain shower heads in the bathroom), was misted with a musky, elegant scent that reminded me of my father, who wore Jovan Musk cologne for much of my childhood. I lost him in the summer of 2020, but in an aromatic sense, he was there with me in The Netherlands. It’s a small touch, as is the nightly turndown with slippers placed on the floor bedside, with a folded bathrobe, mini stroopwafels, and box of spring water on the bed itself. It’s all so undeniably unique and sensory-pleasing to return to each day after exploring museums, flower markets, football matches, doing some boutique shopping, or having dinner at Mondi, The College Hotel’s in-house, upscale Caribbean restaurant, or at any number of fine dining spots in the neighbourhood. That last word isn’t a cheap throwaway because The College Hotel is located where Amsterdammers actually reside, which made my stay feel more authentic and gave me memories of a real place more than spots in a tourist guidebook. Private Canal Cruise There are no shortage of canal cruises on offer in Amsterdam. Each will provide visitors with the chance to calmly careen atop some of the city's 165 canals, under many of its 1,200 bridges, and maybe enjoy a can of soda or bag of crisps along the way. But I had a far, far more luxurious experience on those legendary Dutch waterways! If you plan ahead and have the means, you too can and honestly, should try to charter a private canal boat with Stromma and enjoy a romantic meal during an exclusive and thoroughly private canal cruise. You’ll taste local specialties like gouda cheese and bitterballen, sip fine wines, and be still and quiet with the entire deck of a boat to yourself and/or your partner, or together with family, friends, or a group. Premium Seats to an Ajax Football match One of the most historically important occurs every fortnight at the Johan Cruyff Arena, a short ride away from the city center, and can be had as a luxury football experience allowing you to soak up the atmosphere in style. Book an Ajax hospitality package for premium leather seats situated perfectly above the pitch, right at center circle, an Ajax scarf, and the chance to witness the continuation of this traditionally grand club battles during Eredivisie matches or on special European nights when this legendary clubs hosts teams from the U.K. and around the continent. I was in the arena for a 4-0 demolition of Turkish club Beşiktaş and it was one of the most remarkable nights I’ve spent at a football ground (and I’ve seen over 100 matches in over 15 countries). Best of Rijksmuseum Private Tour Available in English and International Sign Language, a private one-hour tour of the massive and massively impressive Rijksmusuem will not only get up close and personal with a slew of Rembrandts, including The Night Watch, the master painter's most famous and enormous work currently undergoing a staggering renovation being performed live inside a specially designed glass viewing box for all to see every day, but the guide will help you understand the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of all the artwork, too. Wander the Jordaan District Located a stone's throw from Amsterdam Centraal Station is a quaint, charming neighborhood that’s lined with boutique shops, adorable little cafes, art galleries, homes dating back to the 17th century, and secret courtyard gardens. The city can sometimes be full on, so a tiny detour to Jordaan can help those with crowd anxiety unwind while still being in the heart of it all. A stroll here occurs at a slower pace than in the rest of Amsterdam and offers visitors the chance to exhale and be more present. Luxury Shopping on 9 Streets If shopping is your way to unwind and to fully experience a city, retail therapy is waiting for you in De Negen Straatjes (the 9 streets). You'll find a slew of independent shops ranging from designer boutiques to vintage stores that sell retro bags, coveted shades, fine art, and just about every other thing you can imagine. Jazz at Bimhuis For a half-century, locals and tourists have been pouring into this delightfully intimate room in a stunning black box on the water to hear some of the finest jazz musicians perform nightly. As nightcaps go, after dinner or a fancy French feast at Brasserie Margaux or a sidewalk Italian dinner of pasta and seafood at Ferilli's Caffè Ristorante — two gems in the Amsterdam Qud-Zuid neighborhood, an evening at Bimhuis literally sounds like the most laid back and luxurious idea in the whole of The Netherlands. Luxury Spa and Turkish Hammam at Corendon New-West’s Vitality Spa There’s a one-of-a-kind suite at this hotel in the ‘Shoreditch’ of Amsterdam, a burgeoning and diverse neighborhood west of the city centre that I’ll get to in a moment, but first I want to focus on the luxurious Vitality spa , the largest in Amsterdam, that sits underneath the stunningly designed hotel lobby and their more lively, colorful, and casual version of Mondi (the Caribbean restaurant in The College Hotel). Not only is there an endless pool for swimming laps in a small space, but also a sandy room with sunlight lamps, loungers, and a gigantic ocean mural to mimic beach time, and a genuine Turkish Hammam that has ladies-only afternoons every Monday-Wednesday so that Muslim women can disrobe and relax in private and in peace. On the 7th floor, in room 737, in the Cockpit Suite, a huge 120 square meter room split down the middle, between the bedroom and bathroom and the living room and dining room, by the front third of an actual decommissioned 737 airplane. You, your partner, and kids can climb around inside the cockpit, which is still furnished with comfortable faux fur seat liners the pilots once used, turn knobs, touch buttons, and play pretend, and sit in the first three rows of seats — maybe take your breakfast on a tray like in-flight meal service, only far, far better tasting. This is one of the most luxurious, playful, and amazing hotel rooms in the world, and it’s way less expensive than you would guess. The Katten Kabinet Set over two floors of a centuries-old stately home, and a bucolic outdoor courtyard, the Katten Kabinet is a museum dedicated solely to cats, humans’ most luxurious companion. You'll see art, marketing materials like movie posters, photographs of famous people like Hemingway with their cats, and more art and artefacts featuring or about kitties. Plus, you'll see real cats roaming around too. It's a delightfully relaxing place for cat lovers that I featured in my forthcoming book, Street Cats and Where to Find Them (Running Press, August 2025).  See, you can and should spend a few days in Amsterdam enjoying the finer things without once indulging in the temptations that have admittedly made it world-famous to a new generation of travelers. • Elevate Your Home with DUSK’s Autumn/Winter 2024 Interior Must-Haves

As the colder months set in, DUSK’s Autumn/Winter 2024 range focuses on creating warm, stylish interiors that combine nature, luxury, and personal touches. The collection combines elegance, comfort, and sustainability. With natural elements, high-quality craftsmanship, and a focus on timeless beauty, this season’s trends ensure your home feels like a cosy, stylish sanctuary throughout the colder months. Whether you’re looking to add a few pieces or completely refresh your space, DUSK’s range has something to inspire everyone. Here, we delve into their 4 key themes: 1. Natural Sanctuary: Bringing the Outdoors In DUSK’s collection embraces earthy tones and natural materials, evoking the tranquillity of nature. Soft greens, browns, and greys combine with materials like linen and wood to create soothing, biophilic spaces. Large plants and nature-inspired elements like woven baskets or stone accents enhance this look, making it ideal for creating a calming retreat at home. As biophilic design continues to rise in popularity, this trend helps you stay connected to the outdoors even as the temperatures drop. 2. The Investment Era: Timeless Elegance This season, DUSK encourages investing in durable, timeless pieces that will elevate your home. Their range features neutral colour palettes, geometric patterns, and luxurious materials such as marble and high-quality fabrics. The idea behind the Investment Era  is to select pieces that blend aesthetic beauty with functionality, helping you curate a sophisticated space that will stand the test of time. Opt for subtle lighting solutions to add warmth and enhance the minimalist but rich textures. 3. Wabi-Sabi: Embracing Imperfection The Wabi-Sabi philosophy is at the heart of DUSK’s approach to interiors this autumn. Their range highlights the beauty of simplicity and imperfection, with items that feel personal, handcrafted, and natural. Embrace organic shapes, raw-edged fabrics, and a blend of old and new décor items. This trend moves away from perfection, celebrating the authenticity of a lived-in home. 4. Dark Romanticism: Bold and Dramatic For those who love drama and luxury, DUSK’s Dark Romanticism  trend brings opulence into the home. Expect deep, jewel-toned hues like emerald and sapphire, complemented by rich textures such as velvet and metallic accents. This look is perfect for creating statement spaces that evoke a sense of mystery and elegance. Whether you add bold throw cushions, plush bedding, or metallic accessories, this trend allows you to be daring while maintaining an air of sophistication. • Neptune x Glebe House: A Colourful Fusion of Art and Culinary Design

Demonstrating its expertise in blending design, function, and personality, Neptune has carefully crafted a Henley kitchen for Glebe House owners, chef Hugo Guest, and his artist wife, Olive Guest. Their new kitchen, located in a recently converted outbuilding on their East Devon estate, is a true reflection of the couple's shared passions for cooking and creating a welcoming, vibrant atmosphere through thoughtful design. Glebe House, originally a Georgian vicarage, has been in Hugo's family for generations. After taking over from his parents, Olive and Hugo transformed the property into a seven-bedroom guesthouse and restaurant. Since opening in 2021, it has drawn visitors with its idyllic setting, farm-to-table dining, and eclectic interiors. The couple’s signature style—rich, homely, and brimming with colour—carries over into their newly renovated home, where Neptune has played a crucial role in bringing their vision to life. The kitchen is at the heart of this renovation project, showcasing Neptune’s Henley Kitchen design, selected for its timeless appeal and versatility. Olive and Hugo opted for a combination of solid white oak base cabinetry with a natural finish, and wall cabinetry painted in Neptune’s Burnt Sienna. The centrepiece of the kitchen is the large island, finished in Neptune’s striking Burnham Red, reflecting the warm, eclectic palette that defines the Glebe House guesthouse. The couple’s burgundy Everhot cooker further enhances this lively aesthetic. The Henley kitchen is known not only for its visual appeal but also for its clever functional design. Features like a single-door larder and wide, deep drawer storage offer ample space, catering to Hugo's practical needs as a chef. The worktops are a mix of Polished Breccia Sarda granite, provided by Anything Stone, and a full-stave oak surface on the island, giving the space a balanced organic feel. Brass knobs and taps lend a timeless look, while the room’s panelling and Neptune’s Cactus shade on the window frames add a relaxed warmth and harmony to the space. Incorporating an open-plan layout, the kitchen seamlessly flows into the adjacent living area. Neptune’s Pembroke shelving in Moss Green is used to create a functional yet stylish home library and entertainment centre. The utility cloakroom, located just off the dining room, features Neptune’s Chichester cabinet, elegantly concealing the washing machine. Olive’s artistic touch is evident in the design of a curtain that finishes the Chichester sink cabinet, cohesively tying the spaces together. Reflecting on the project, Olive Guest shared, “Just as with the guesthouse, from the outset I had a clear idea of how I wanted our new family kitchen to look and feel. As an artist, the use of colour, tone, and texture in a space is incredibly important to me, and of course, functionality is crucial for Hugo. Working with Neptune to bring this to life was a natural fit. Their dedication to craftsmanship and style, combined with the broad palette of materials and colours to choose from, was ideal. It was all completely seamless, and the stunning results have gone far beyond our expectations – we feel very house proud.” Claire Birkbeck, Senior Kitchen And Interior Designer at Neptune and Lead Designer on this project revealed, "The Glebe House kitchen project was a great opportunity to explore both traditional craftsmanship and modern functionality. The kitchen design combines natural wood, earthy colours, and a rustic, warm atmosphere. The Henley’s natural white oak paired with the earthy Burnt Sienna on the cabinets and Burnham Red on the island contribute to a welcoming, character-filled space that ties in with the surrounding countryside. It’s a perfect example of how thoughtful design can bring warmth, character, and practicality together.” The collaboration between Neptune and Glebe House has resulted in a family kitchen that embodies the Guests' love of creativity, food, and design, making it not just a place to cook but a welcoming space for family life and gatherings. https://www.neptune.com/
