The Michelin Guide for Hotels: Here's The 8 Best in Italy

The Michelin Guide, known globally for its prestigious restaurant ratings, has expanded its influence into the world of hotel hospitality.

This natural development of the brand aims to ensure that travellers can discover exceptional accommodations that offer high-quality services, comfort, and unique experiences.

In Italy, a country renowned for its culture, history, and gastronomy, several hotels have received the coveted Michelin Keys, representing the pinnacle of hospitality excellence.

The Michelin Key Rating System

Similar to the Michelin stars for restaurants, the Michelin Keys for hotels are awarded based on rigorous criteria that include:

  • Comfort and Quality:

Evaluation of the overall environment, including the quality of furnishings, decor, and amenities.

  • Service and Hospitality:

Assessment of the professionalism, attentiveness, and friendliness of the staff.

  • Services and Facilities:

Consideration of the range and quality of services offered, such as spas, fitness centers, and business services.

  • Cuisine:

Evaluation of the hotel's dining options, from breakfast to room service to in-house restaurants.

  • Character and Uniqueness:

Assessment of hotels that offer unique experiences, whether through historical significance, innovative design, or exclusive locations.

The list of hotels in Italy includes 8 three-key hotels, 31 two-key hotels, and 107 one-key hotels.

The eight in Italy that garnered the coveted three keys are listed below:

JK Place Capri (Capri, Campania)

With 22 rooms, like the other hotels in the chain, the interiors of the J.K. Capri are designed by the Tuscan architect and designer Michele Bönan: “Classic, elegant, with a touch of English country style, pastel colours and patterned wallpapers”. It is one of the few structures on the island directly overlooking the sea, on the cliff above the port of Marina Grande.

Corte della Maesta (Civita di Bagnoregio, Lazio)

In the "dying city" in the province of Viterbo, in Civita di Bagnoregio, there is the Court of the Maestà with its "five suites with feminine and evocative names: La Badessa, la Sonnambula, L'Intrusa, La Maestà and La Scrittrice ”. The rooms have been "carefully restored and furnished with the owner's collection of art objects and antiques": one has a canopy bed, another a frescoed ceiling. No television or air conditioning.

Castello di Reschio (Lisciano Niccone, Umbria)

In Tabaccaia di Reschio, Lisciano Niccone, Perugia, nestled "in a vast estate on the picturesque Umbrian hills on the border with Tuscany" stands the Reschio Castle. The structure, 36 rooms, dates back to the 10th century. Most of the suites are in the ancient sacristy, "but the most extraordinary occupy five floors of the ancient castle tower". Behind the walls an oval-shaped swimming pool, then - among other things - Roman baths, hammam, Swedish sauna and massage room.

Casa Maria Luigia (Modena, Emilia Romagna)

“With just 12 rooms”, the Michelin Guide defines it as “intimate, but anything but banal thanks to the lively interior design and the remarkable collection of modern furniture and contemporary works of art”. It's a 15-minute drive from Modena, "but many guests prefer to stay on site to explore the estate's gardens and grounds." It has “a pool, a tennis court, and a fitness center that doubles as an art gallery".

Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco (Montalcino, Tuscany)

In the province of Siena, in Montalcino, the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco also obtained three Keys, embellished with a culinary school and an organic vegetable garden. The structure is located on the 2 thousand hectare agricultural estate, which also houses a winery.

Il San Pietro di Positano (Positano, Campania)

“Perched on the jagged cliffs" of the Amalfi Coast, the San Pietro di Positano conquers three keys. “A small 17th century chapel” marks the entrance, “while the rest of the structure develops on the cliff below” with each floor resting “on the rocky wall like a staircase". Here too the view stands out: each room "overlooks the sea with a private terrace on the front". It has 59 rooms, a swimming pool carved into the cliff and a lift that takes you from the hall to the private beach

Aman Venice (Venice, Veneto)

Also in Venice there is the Aman Venice (24 rooms). "Apart from some discreet interior design interventions and the many modern furnishings, the building is exactly as its ancient owners left it", explains the Guide. The best rooms overlook the Grand Canal and guests "are organized guided tours with art historians, chefs and writers, to discover every facet of the lagoon city"

Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel (Venice, Veneto)

The Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice, on the Giudecca Island, has 95 rooms. “Palazzo Vendramin, an ancient aristocratic residence from the 15th century, is now part of the Hotel Cipriani and consists of seven luxury suites and three double rooms, with private butler service and, of course, a spectacular view of Venice,” explains the Guide site. It has “private speedboats that don't finish their rides until the last guest has returned” and a saltwater pool
