Louis Vuitton Revives the Iconic Takashi Murakami Collaboration for January 2025

Louis Vuitton has unveiled its second collaboration with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, featuring remastered designs celebrating the designer duo’s original noughties collaboration. This highly awaited release, set to launch on January 1st 2025, comes two decades after their first partnership in 2003.

The original collection made its debut on Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2003 ready-to-wear runway, under the creative direction of designer Marc Jacobs. The bags were the work of guest artist Takashi Murakami, whom Jacob’s sought out to create a line of accessories which would appeal to a changing fashion audience - and this collection of playfully patterned handbags quickly became the defining collaboration of the decade.

In 2025 the collection's legacy is set to continue, with Louis Vuitton and Takeshi Murakami confirming these iconic logoed bags will return. The French fashion house took to Instagram to tease the revival of this coveted collection, sharing several short clips honoring Murakami’s legendary designs.

Whilst finer details of the collection remain under wraps, fashion enthusiasts can anticipate a “vibrant re-edition” of the nostalgic collaboration, celebrating the return of the multi-coloured LV monogram - already spotted on LV ambassador Zendaya - alongside Murakami’s floral and bear motifs.

Takeshi Murakami’s original 2003 designs represent a fusion of art and forward-facing fashion, with his signature cherry blossoms and playful floral motifs now synonymous with the ‘noughties’ fashion era. Revisited for the limited 2025 release, the Japanese artist's works will be reimagined across a range of recognisable LV silhouettes and featured on the returning ‘pochette’ and ‘speedy’ bags.

To this day, the pair's original collection holds lasting value with seasoned fashion fans and preloved connoisseurs, with sought-after pieces from the collaboration, such as the Pochette shoulder bag, valued at over £2000 on the second-hand market.

The impact of the collection has transcended time, and back in 2009 whilst reflecting on the original collection’s success, then creative director of the house Marc Jacobs remarked “Our collaboration has produced a lot of works, and has been a huge influence and inspiration to many. It has been, and continues to be, a monumental marriage of art and commerce. The ultimate crossover – one for both the fashion and art history books.”

More than two decades on, Louis Vuitton and Takeshi Murakami’s artistic-fashion feat continues to make its mark in the luxury realm, with this re-edition launch commemorating a “journey to the past”.

The Louis Vuitton x Takeshi Murakami Collection Launches on 1st January 2025.
