For decades, the Hamptons have reigned supreme as the ultimate coastal escape for affluent New Yorkers.
But as of 16th May 2025, United Airlines will make it easier than ever for US buyers to explore a European alternative, with the launch of a direct flight from Newark/New York to Faro, in Portugal’s sun-drenched Algarve region.
The new route—part of United’s major 2025 expansion—will operate three times a week and marks the airline’s first direct link between the US and southern Portugal.
While United already connects passengers to Lisbon, this new flight is opening up a different kind of Portuguese experience—one that’s drawing comparisons to the Hamptons in both lifestyle and real estate.

“The Algarve delivers the elegance, serenity and luxury of the Hamptons, blended with the simplicity and authenticity of the laidback Portuguese lifestyle,” says Alda Filipe, Regional Director and Partner at Kronos Homes.
From its long stretches of golden coastline and dramatic cliffs, to the elegant wooden walkways and calm ocean views, the Algarve oozes understated luxury. The parallels with the Hamptons don’t end there—both regions offer secluded villas, open-plan living, and proximity to high-end leisure, wellness and dining experiences.
One of the standout destinations for US and international buyers is Vale do Lobo—the Algarve’s original lifestyle resort. Situated just a short walk from the beach and the stylish Vale do Lobo Clubhouse, a four-bedroom villa here is currently on the market for €2,695,000 (approx. $2.9M). With a south-facing garden, private swimming pool, Jacuzzi and expansive sunny terraces, the home offers both seclusion and sophistication.
And unlike the Hamptons, where median property prices hover around $2.79M, buyers in Portugal benefit from a rich cultural backdrop, a more relaxed pace of life, and arguably better year-round weather.
Beyond the properties, the Vale do Lobo lifestyle is equally alluring. Residents enjoy access to two championship golf courses, a Royal Spa, and Tinto—a contemporary fine dining restaurant that reimagines Portugal’s rich culinary heritage. From tennis and padel courts to luxury shopping and wellness facilities, this is a place where elegance meets ease.
Nature lovers are just as catered to. While the Hamptons offer a picturesque shoreline, the Algarve stretches it further with dramatic red cliffs, secret coves, mountainous landscapes, and protected nature reserves, where seabirds soar over tranquil lagoons.

“Many of our visitors from the US delight in the Algarve’s balance of elegance, authenticity and a high-quality lifestyle,” Alda Filipe adds. “It’s a winning combination that resonates with all those who spend their vacations here—and inspires many to deepen their connection with the region through property ownership.”
With direct access from New York and a lifestyle that merges high-end living with heartfelt charm, the Algarve is positioning itself as a compelling international rival to the Hamptons—and Vale do Lobo is right at the heart of it.
